The North Will Rise Again, an oral history of Manchester music by John Robb, 400 pages, Aurum Press

5/5 Q magazine ... 'Manchester's musical heritage eulogised in its players own words. Brilliant!'

4/5 Mojo ... 'John Robb spent a year shoving a recorder under the nose of seemingly everybody on the Manchester music scene ... from these interviews he has pieced together an extraordinary history.'

In the past 30 years Manchester has supplied an endless number of key bands in a fast moving and thrilling music scene. Sparked into life by the legendary Sex pistols and Buzzcocks gig at the Free trade hall in 1976, there has been a non-stop supply of vital bands from Joy Division to the Smiths to the Fall, Factory records and the Hacienda before fast forwarding through baggy era of the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays before ending up with Oasis - the UK's biggest band of the nineties. This major new book will be the first definitive book on the Manchester music scene. The book is the story of a generation defined by punk and who took that key musical movement's energy and turned it into its own idiosyncratic, northern style that has seen some of the most influential bands in the history of music. It looks at the music, the style, the clothes, the drugs against the backdrop of a city that was the world's first post-industrial city soundtracking a key part in the city's history. It looks at the clubs, the gigs, the key players and the maverick spirit that imbues the city's key music scene and is set to be one of the big music books of the year. This book tells this story as an oral history from all the players from the bands and one the scene giving first hand accounts of the ever evolving music scene interviewing the likes of Morrissey (his first interview for a book like this), Ian Brown, Noel Gallagher, Sean Ryder, Johnny Marr, Peter Hook, Howard Devoto, Pete Shelley, Peter Noone, Badly Drawn Boy, Pete Shelley, Tony Wilson, Jon Savage and 150 others in a whirlwind tour of Manchester the music city. John Robb has written a best selling biog on the Stone Roses and the international best selling 'Punk Rock An Oral History'. He also fronts the band Goldblade and is a regular radio and TV pop culture pundit and presenter.
